Origin of the route

The route was created in 2001 by an informal partnership between Rucksack Readers and the late John Henderson. While working on a route from Milngavie to Pitlochry, we contacted John who was developing one from Aberfoyle to Pitlochry. We soon agreed to compromise by starting in Drymen. We collaborated on developing and improving the route over the next 20 years. We had no budget and used our spare time to work on this project.

The inaugural walk was held in May 2002 and our guidebook published just afterwards: there have been three further editions as the route has evolved and been improved. 2011 was a landmark year, when various grants allowed us to instal waymarking. The year after, the route was recognised as one of Scotland’s Great Trails and its popularity is well established.
