Progress of the Way

The route was created in 2001 by an informal partnership between Rucksack Readers and the late John Henderson, who were both developing a route to Pitlochry. We quickly agreed to compromise between starting from Milngavie and Aberfoyle by choosing Drymen instead. We collaborated on developing and improving the route over the next 20 years. We had no budget and worked in our spare time.

The inaugural walk was held in May 2002 and the first guidebook published just afterwards. The fourth edition was last revised in 2024. In 2011 various grants allowed us to instal some waymarking, and in 2012 the route was recognised as one of Scotland’s Great Trails, its popularity well established.

By 2024 it was clear that the 2011 waymarking was in urgent need of upgrade and renewal, both because of minor route changes and damage, loss and fading of discs. So we set up a Waymarker Fund and invited all the support services on our list to contribute. Within weeks, we had received received generous pledges from the following towards the cost of 200 waymarkers. Installation will happen across the winter of 2024/25.
