Bridge closure north of Aberfoyle

Forestry & Land Scotland has just closed the footbridge shown on the guidebook page 36, pending a report by a structural engineer. This is at mile 11.4 of the Way, just north of Aberfoyle, and means that you cannot follow the official Way from Aberfoyle northward until it has been reopened. Fortunately, there is a simple solution: revert to the route as it was before the National Park made us change it. We’ve shown the new route on our online route map and it is actually shorter and simpler. Below are brief directions for the offroad shortcut, shown in red, but if you want to visit shops or cafés, follow the main road instead.

Walk east through Aberfoyle’s Riverside car park to follow Cycle Route 7 for 250 m, then bear left at a grass triangle to reach the main road. Cross over the A821 and head east along its pavement for under 100 m.  At the Medical Centre, turn left up a minor road signed for ‘Dounans Centre’. Follow the track uphill, to and through Dounans, to reach a T-junction at a forest road. Turn right to resume the Way.
